John W. Bauer
Owner, Funeral Director
John W. ("Jack") Bauer, the owner and president of Bauer Family Funeral Homes, has been in funeral service for over 42 years. He established the Bauer Family generational tradition when he joined his father, Amby, in the family business in 1970.
A lifelong resident of Kittanning, Jack graduated from Kittanning Senior High School. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from West Virginia Wesleyan College and is a graduate of the Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science.
Jack has been extremely active in the community serving on the founding Board of Directors of the Fort Armstrong Folk Festival, as a member and past president of the Greater Kittanning Jaycees and as a long-time member of the Kittanning Rotary Club. He also served on the Armstrong County Memorial Hospital Board of Directors and is a member of the Kittanning/East Brady Masonic Lodge #244. A dedicated supporter of the YMCA, Jack served on the Armstrong County YMCA Board of Directors for 20 years and is currently a trustee.
He also had the privilege of serving on the Selected Independent Funeral Homes Board of Directors and was elected president of that international organization in 1996. Jack continues his long association with that group of independently owned funeral homes along with memberships in the National Funeral Directors Association and Pennsylvania Funeral Directors Association.
Jack and his wife, Sue, are both members and Elders of Grace Presbyterian Church in Kittanning. They enjoy sailing, golf, gardening and spending time with their growing family.
Jennifer Bauer Eroh
As the daughter of Jack and Sue Bauer, Jennifer Bauer Eroh represents the third generation to continue the Bauer Family tradition of funeral service. She is a licensed funeral director who graduated from the Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science in 1998 with a diploma in Funeral Service. Jennifer is also a graduate of Kittanning High School and a 1997 graduate of Westminster College, from which she holds a degree in Public Relations. Jennifer is an active member of the Selected Independent Funeral Directors organization and is a Trustee for the Selected Educational Trust. She also holds memberships with the National Funeral Directors Association and the Pennsylvania Funeral Directors Association. Jennifer serves on the boards for both the Richard G. Snyder YMCA and the Worthington Evangelical Lutheran Church Preschool, and is also a member of Grace Presbyterian Church. Jennifer and her husband, Jason, reside in the Worthington area with their two daughters and Black Lab, Medix.
Deana R. Turner
Funeral Director, CFSP
Deana Turner has been a licensed funeral director with the Bauer Family of Funeral Homes since 2008. A native of the area, she is a graduate of Karns City High School and Carlow University where she earned a degree with cum laude honors in Communication and Finance Management. Deana continued her education at the Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science, receiving an Associate's degree in Funeral Service Arts and Sciences. She resides in Chicora with her husband, John, and their two daughters, Sydney and Peyton.
In June of 2010, Deana was awarded the prestigious designation of Certified Funeral Service Practitioner (CFSP) by the Academy of Professional Funeral Service Practice. This is funeral service's national individual recognition granted after completion of specific academic and professional program requirements within the industry. Her other professional memberships include the National Funeral Directors Association, Pennsylvania Funeral Directors Association, Western Pennsylvania Funeral Directors Association, Butler County Funeral Directors Association, the Chicora-East Brady Rotary Club and the Rimersburg Chamber of Commerce. In June of 2012, preceding her two-year board appointment, Deana was inducted President of the Western Pennsylvania Funeral Directors Association for the 2012/2013 term. She is also very active in the Parent-Teacher Organization within the school district her children attend, as well as Board Treasurer for the Karns City Area Football Association. Deana is an adjunct instructor with the Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science Distance Learning program, teaching several courses to future funeral service professionals. As her family comes first, they enjoy spending time together and boating on the Allegheny River.
Joshua C. Starr
A native of the Kittanning area and a 2006 graduate of Kittanning High School, Josh joined the staff at the Bauer Family Funeral Homes after working part-time in funeral service since the age of fifteen. Josh is a 2009 graduate of Point Park College, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Funeral Service and Psychology. He completed his mortuary training at the Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science and fulfilled his residency requirements as a funeral director intern with the Bauer Family Funeral Homes during 2009. He successfully passed both the state and national exams in June of 2010, enabling him to achieve his licensure in Pennsylvania as a funeral director.
Josh became a Deputy Coroner for Armstrong County in 2012 and is on the board of directors for the Allegheny River Development Corporation. He also holds membership with Selected Independent Funeral Directors, the National Funeral Directors Association, the American Society of Embalmers and the Butler Funeral Directors Association. In his leisure time Josh enjoys activities with his family and friends, vacationing and attending theatrical productions. Although winter is his favorite season, Josh also enjoys outdoor gatherings and boating during the summer months.
Mark is a native of Freeport and became a licensed funeral director in 1985. He has enjoyed the many relationships formed and experience gained throughout his career in staff and managerial positions in Williamsport, Jersey Shore, York and Zelienople. He also holds a life insurance license and had served as district manager for a funeral prearrangement marketing firm. Along the way Mark has received specialized training with the Lions Eye Bank at Hershey Medical Center and the Cremation Association of North America. He was excited to join the staff of Bauer Funeral Home in April of 2012 and is pleased and honored to be part of an organization with such a long tradition of dedicated service to the community. Mark and his wife, Beth, reside in Freeport and are proudly anticipating their daughter, Emily's, graduation from Edinboro University in the spring of 2013.
Rebecca J. "Becky" Donahue-Nedd
Funeral Director, Advanced Planning Consultant
Becky, an experienced funeral director for over 10 years, is a graduate of the Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science and Mount Aloysius College. Becky also holds an insurance license. Working in various communities like Camp Hill, Harrisburg, Hanover, and Western PA, she has gained deep knowledge of funeral planning and also pre-funding these critical services. She is beloved by the families she serves, and the professional respect she has gained has earned her the Jay Pittman Memorial Award from Funeral Directors Life Insurance Company.
Becky specializes in advanced funeral planning. She guides and educates individuals and families regarding the importance of planning and protecting loved ones from avoidable emotional and financial hardship. She is excited to join the staff of Bauer Funeral Home to help further their tradition of dedicated service to the community.
Courtney K. Shirey
Courtney Shirey joined the staff of Bauer-Hillis Funeral Homes in February of 2013. She completed her mortuary training at the Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science (PIMS) and is currently licensed with the state of Pennsylvania as a Funeral Intern.
A 2004 graduate of Karns City Jr./Sr. High School, Courtney pursued her Funeral Director's License at PIMS, receiving an Associate's in Specialized Technologies degree in Funeral Service Arts and Sciences. During her time at PIMS, she served as a class representative on the student government.
Courtney currently resides in Petrolia, and her family has lived in the area for many years. She is the daughter of Robert and Barbara Shirey of Petrolia, granddaughter of Betty McCall and the late Dick McCall of Petrolia and the late Harold and Mary Shirey of Parker. In her free time, Courtney enjoys activities with her family and friends, golfing with her dad and leading the youth group at the Petrolia Presbyterian Church.
Tammy Carson joined the Bauer Funeral Home in May 2007 as office manager. She is a graduate of Freeport High School and then attended the Bradford School of Pittsburgh where she received a diploma in secretarial/medical terminology. After working in an office environment for 17 years, she decided to continue her education at Newport Business Institute, graduating in 2007 with an Associate in Specialized Business Degree with her major in Accounting. Tammy was recently appointed the treasurer of Cadogan Township where she resides with her husband, Doug, and two sons, Brandon and Tyler. She enjoys vacationing at the beach with family and friends.
Community Relations Manager
Sandra Mikita joined the Bauer Family Funeral Home team in 1991. As the community relations manager, Sandra coordinates the many special projects that are offered by our funeral homes including the Holiday Remembrance Program, the Senior Expo and Adopt-a-Highway, and also participates in various local functions. In 2009, she initiated a very successful and unique outreach program, Bauer Steps Ahead, which provided fellowship and support for community members through group outings each month; the program was expanded to the Bauer-Hillis funeral homes in 2012. She also conducts presentations on numerous topics throughout the year to churches, schools, social clubs and groups.
Sandra gained her Pennsylvania life insurance license in 1990 and serves our families with follow-up care as an insurance claim liaison. She was the recipient of national awards in the insurance industry by Monumental Life Insurance Company for her outstanding performance, recognized for her talent, integrity and high level of personal responsibility in 1996 and 2002. Sandra is also a knowledgeable cemetery monument designer and sales representative who capably helps families design personalized memorial cemetery headstones.
Sandy resides in the Rural Valley area with her husband, Sam. In her free time she enjoys various outdoor activities, but above all cherishes time with her family.
Kayla began her work at Bauer Family Funeral Homes in April of 2011. She hails from Carlisle, OH, a small town in between Cincinnati and Dayton. Kayla graduated from Carlisle High School in 2005 and attended Anderson University in Anderson, IN, earning her Bachelor's degree in Mass Communication with minors in Political Science and Marketing in May of 2009.
In August of 2010, Kayla moved to Kittanning with her husband, Luke. She has enjoyed her time in Western Pennsylvania and is involved at the Kittanning Nazarene Church where Luke serves as youth pastor. When not at work, Kayla loves spending time with her husband and their dog, Bree. She also enjoys being with family and friends, reading, being outside, traveling and cheering on the Indianapolis Colts (sorry Steelers fans).
Grounds and Maintenance
Ralph has been maintaining the grounds, buildings and vehicles for Bauer Family Funeral Homes since 1993. He also sets burial vaults for our families and assists the funeral directors during funeral services. Ralph can always be counted on to go the extra mile to make sure every detail is taken care of for the families we serve. When not at work, Ralph enjoys hunting and fishing with his son and friends.
Ralph is a resident of East Franklin Township where he lives with his wife and son.
