Dr. Harry "Pat" Wolfe, Jr.

Dr. Harry "Pat" Wolfe, Jr., 93, of Kittanning, PA, died Thursday, October 27, 2016, at Good Samaritan Hospice in Cabot.

He was born May 16, 1923 in New Kensington, PA, the son of Harry O. and Vera (Craig) Wolfe, and the grandson of Clark and Ann Craig of Widnoon, PA. His gifts from God included his wife, Jean, daughter Patricia Brown, of Manassas, VA; sons, Richard Wolfe and wife, Jeanette, of San Mateo, CA, Robert Wolfe and Margie Mitchell, of Bloomfield, and Daniel Wolfe and wife, Carol, of Kittanning. Dr. Wolfe was blessed with step-children, Rick Walker, Mrs. Connie Thomas, Mrs. Karen Spoonster, Keith Walker and Mark Walker. In their combined families, Pat and Jean have been blessed with 18 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Aileen; brothers, Oakley Charles Wolfe and Rolland Duane Wolfe; sister, Sally Wolfe; and grandson, Ryan Colwell.

Pat was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Kittanning where he was a certified lay speaker. He was very active in the Western Pennsylvania Conference of the United Methodist Church, a leader in older adult ministries at the local and national level, and served as a short-term missionary in Haiti.

Dr. Wolfe was a navigator in the US Air Force in World War II, serving as a member of a B-24 bomber crew flying 35 combat missions and also becoming a navigator with the Air Transport Command.

While at Bethany (WVA) College where he received his degree in mathematics education, he lettered in basketball and baseball and served as president of the Psi Chapter of Beta Theta Pi fraternity. Pat received his master's degree in school administration from Western Reserve University and a doctorate in education from Penn State University. He began his public school career as a teacher and then was an assistant principal for Latrobe Public Schools. He also held administrative positions in Claysburg, PA, Meyersdale, PA and Armstrong County, PA. In 1975, he became the superintendent for Grove City Public Schools and in 1979 returned to the Greater Latrobe School District as the superintendent, retiring from that position in 1986.

He was a member of Phi Delta Kappa, a long-time Rotarian and a member of the Kittanning Elks Lodge. For a number of years, Pat enjoyed being a judge for the PA Junior Miss Program at both the local and state levels. He spent time as a high school basketball and track coach, and was a certified PIAA basketball official in his younger years. He was an avid baseball fan and golfer.

Pat enjoyed sharing his life with both his immediate family and extended families, and tried to make a positive contribution to the communities in which he lived.

The family will receive friends from 7-9 PM on Sunday, November 6, 2016 and from 2-4 and 7-9 PM on Monday, November 7, 2016 at Bauer Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., 515 N. McKean Street, Kittanning.

Additional visitation will be from 10 AM until the time of funeral services at 11 AM on Tuesday, November 8, 2016 at First United Methodist Church, 301 N. Jefferson St., Kittanning, with the Rev. Wade Berkey officiating.

Interment will be in Tidal Union Cemetery, Templeton, PA, where military honors will be presented by the American Legion Honor Guard.
