Dorothy Holt


Dorothy Holt, 96, of State College. PA, formerly of Dayton, died Saturday, January 30, 2010, at the Terrace at Brookline in State College, Pa.

She was born October 26, 1913, in Sagamore, Pa., the daughter of Ephriam and Lizzie (Johnston) Peron. In November 1938 she married Leonard Holt, who preceded her in death in 1988.

A 1932 graduate of Indiana State Teacher’s College (now Indiana University of Pennsylvania), Mrs. Holt taught elementary school in Armstrong Country for more than four decades, including 13 years in Cowanshannock Township and 31 years at Dayton Elementary School. Upon her retirement in 1984, she was recognized by the Pennsylvania State Education Association as a “great-grand-teacher” for having taught three generations of students.

Mrs. Holt was an active member of many community and professional organizations, including the Indiana County Chapter of the National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution, the Kittanning Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, Delta Kappa Gamma Honorary Teachers’ Society, the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees, the Rural Valley Women’s Civic Club, the Dayton American Legion Auxiliary, Dayton Historical Society Marshall House, Dayton Ladies’ Day Out Club, and Glade Run United Presbyterian Church in Dayton.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brothers Gerald, John, and Thomas Peron and her sister Elizabeth Kinter. She is survived by her son, Leonard Loren Holt of Oakmont, her daughter Karen Miller and her husband Gary of State College, grandson Gregory Miller and his wife Vera, and great-grandson Samuel Miller of Monroeville.

Family and friends will be received at the Bauer-Bly Funeral Home, 125 E. Main Street, Dayton, PA, on Tuesday, February 2, 2010 from 2-4 PM and 6-8 PM

Additional visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 3, 2010, at the funeral home from 10:00 AM until the time of services at 11:00 AM with the Monsignor George Appleyard officiating.

Interment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery, White Twp., Indiana Co., PA,
