Sarah Hope Graff Waingrow


Sarah Hope Graff Waingrow of Edgartown, MA died Sunday, June 13, 2010, in Boston, MA.

She was born February 17, 1926, in Pittsburgh, PA, daughter of the late Judge J. Frank Graff and Laura Elizabeth Graff.

Hope attended Kittanning High School and graduated from Passaic, New Jersey, High School. She received her Bachelor’s degree from Cornell University and her Master’s in Literature from Pennsylvania State University where she taught English Literature for a short time. She was for many years an investigative journalist for the Claremont Courier in California. After moving to Martha’s Vineyard in 1981, she became Secretary to the Selectmen Board of Edgartown, MA until the last two years. As a tribute to her, the Selectmen Board ordered the American flag to be flown at half staff for three days.

She is survived by daughters, Ellis Waingrow of Boston, MA, Emily Waingrow Falke of Santa Barbara, CA; a son, Daniel Waingrow and wife Debra of Seattle, WA; seven grandchildren; a brother, Peter Graff IV and wife Nancy of Kittanning, PA; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Marshall Waingrow and a sister Laura G. McIlwain.

A memorial service and internment of her cremated remains will be at the Worthington Lutheran Church cemetery Saturday, July 17, 2010, at 11 AM with the Rev. Kirk W. Bish officiating.
